Cancellation of Mobile World Congress 2020, the flagship event for the smartphone industry, due to concerns about the spread of coronavirus or COVID-19, follows a number of no shows at February’s ISE 2020 AV exhibition in Amsterdam for the same reason. These are important events for the mobile communications and AV industries, where ground-breaking products get their first airing, important relationships are forged and new deals brokered. Somewhat ironically, the very technologies promoted at these events, ISE especially, mean that one no longer has to meet face to face to get business done – though, in my book, it is always best to do so. Thus, it is that we are able to report on the new range of SMART Boards launched by SMART Technologies at ISE (see page 28).

Another new product we have learnt about ‘at a distance’ is the FUSiON scanner from ibml. It might seem counter- intuitive to launch the world’s fastest scanner at a time when businesses are transitioning to all-digital processes and implementing distributed scanning in remote offices, but ibml makes a good case for centralising scanning operations and consolidating several applications on one mega scanner. To find out more, turn to page 24. On page 26 we highlight another potential game-changer, Shayype. As someone who struggles to remember passwords – who doesn’t? – I hope to be writing about this technology for years to come.
